Open House Recap

  • We all felt the open house went really well. We looked at the feedback and discussed the following:
    • presenters for showcases should have microphones
    • showcases should be closer together
    • create an area for the showcase
    • could we make the day shorter?
    • provide a schedule especially for the showcases
    • the summer open house will cover the same topics
  • Action Item
    • PLEASE send your open house  handouts to Leigh
    • Leigh will organize them and send them to Karen for the hrlc webpage
    • Leigh is contacting Nancy about having the summer open house at Centenary College

Technology Challenge

  • We discussed the Helene Blowers technology challenge and how something similar on a smaller scale could be a good follow-up to the open houses
  • these would be self-directed but  Mary suggested we could be assigned to people as contacts if they needed help
  • Ideas were things like online scavenger hunts and using some technology we have presented
  • Some topic ideas were:
    • Library Thing/Library Elf/Aqua Browser or 3rd party enhancements to your catalog
    • Personalized web resources: del.icio.us, igoogle
    • Wikis
    • Images: flickr, picasa, scanner
  • Action Item
    • We are going to continue discussing this idea using GOOGLE GROUPS

Open House overview
  •       Topics have been selected

Assistive Tech (Valierie)
Wii (Mary
Podcasting (Leigh)
MS Shared Computer Toolkit has a new name: Windows SteadyState (Ryan) – it’s a new version.

Tables will be arranged the same way as last time, but more bunched up towards one end because at one end we’ll have our showcase area – where we will present a five to ten-minute verbal show & tell, “why you should care about this” (see schedule below)

10:45 Nancy
11:15 Leigh
11:45 Valerie
12:15 Kurt
12:45 Mary

In preparation:
  •      MARY will put together a general handout with short blurbs about each topic – “why you should care about this” – and “Learn more about this topic in our showcase at XX time” and “Stop by our booth to pick up additional info about this topic!”
  •      MARY will update the slide show that will run perpetually at one end of the room.
  •     ELLEN will re-send everyone the template to use for handouts
  •     EVERYONE: Handouts need to be to Ellen by November 16th to be reproduced.
At bottom of handouts, include blurb: Join this committee! Contact Committee Chair
    Leigh.keller@gmail.com for more info.
Also,  don’t forget to put your contact info – phone, email, facebook, IM, etc
  •      MARY will make signs for everyone’s tables and send them as PDFs to everyone for approval. (Mary will bring sign holders; Mary will print several Try This Out in the Lab signs, Mary will bring blue painter’s tape to tape signs up)

Door prizes:
  •      MP3 player
  • Flash drive
  • Advance reader’s copy of book
  • Gift cards (Dunkin’ donuts? iTunes? Starbucks, Panera (they have wifi)?

EVERYONE: Ellen asked that as many people as possible be there at 8:30 am or thereabouts, to help wrangle tables and set up.

Deb M. will help Ellen at the registration table. Kim Grohs will be available to help people out in the lab, and Leigh will also ask Karen Brodsky if she will be available to help in the lab, and/or wander around directing people. Bill H will be there also (to conduct tours, be a general troubleshooter)

TECH COMMITTEE GOES ON THE ROAD

We talked about the possibility of “Take the Tech Committee Meetings On the Road” in the spring-- we could perhaps attract some people who we haven’t been seeing, people who are curious.

Change the format of our meetings (more like the Infolink model)? Include an informational program section (with different committee members assigned to present certain topics, or even bringing in outside speakers) where people can see the practical applications of different things. (We could even just present expanded versions of our open house programs, for the first few.)

  •       Possible topics for informational meetings
  •       Ryan could do an expanded “Securing your public access computers”
  •       Kurt could talk about Open ILS
  •       Wikis and their use in the library world
  •       Video games (demo PS2 and Wii)

Possible dates for the meeting that we will be taking on the road? (We also need to finalize a topic.) We will do it in March.

Open House in Summer 2008
Sussex Warren librarians would like us to take the Open House on the road out west so it’s easier for them to get there. We could possibly do it at Centenary in June or July – just do the repeat of our November open house, like we did last year. This way we might get some of the Hunterdon County people to attend.
Leigh suggested we could try to do it at the end of June because it’s after school has ended but before peoples’ summer vacations have taken place.

Next meeting
We will try an online chat meeting
We will do it in January – the December 13th meeting is cancelled.
Monday, January 14th, 2:30 pm, online.
Most of us are on Google so maybe we can use GoogleChat – but can we create a chatroom?
The NJLA Membership Committee uses AIM and creates a chatroom.
Ellen says BCCLS uses some chat program to have discussions among themselves, she will look into it.
Leigh will create an agenda for the online meeting in January, please contact her with any agenda items.
We should review the evaluations from the open house at this meeting.
